The English Learning center is a learning community of refugees,immigrants, and advocates. All of the teachers, tutors, and classroom assistants are volunteers. "The mission of Hmong Cultural Center Inc. (HCC) is to enhance the personal development of children, youth, and adults through Hmong Cultural education while providing resources that contribute to cross-cultural understanding between Hmong and non-Hmong people." A great place to learn about the culture and history at the same time working with the people. The site has classrooms, a library, and a cultural center filed with tools, artifacts and instruments. Plus experts to tell you all about Hmong Life and history. A great place to visit even if you are tutoring at another site! Service-learners serve as classroom assistants working one on one or in small groups with learners needing help. Classes are Monday through Friday from 10 AM-2 PM and 4 PM-6 PM. Citizenship classes are held on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 4 PM to 6 PM. SHINE service learners do not need to be there for the entire 4 hour class. Hmong speakers are encouraged to tutor here but this is not a requirement. |

University Office: 379 University Avenue, Suite 204, St. Paul, MN 55103 The Education and Training Department is staffed with experienced and professional instructors who are dedicated to and understand the needs or English learners. HAP's Intensive ESL classes are intended to help participants learn the level of English needed to find and maintain employment. Classes consist of 20 or fewer participants and meet four hours per day, Monday through Friday. HAP's Civics Classes teaches adult English language learners the skills to understand and navigate governmental, educational and workplace systems, and other key American institutions such as banking and healthcare. The Civics classes uses a work-focused curriculum to teach Civics and, at the same time, help prepare students for employment. Civics classes are two and half hours in the evening, Monday through Thursday. Intensive ESL classes are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM-11:45 AM or Monday-Thursday 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. |

Vietnamese Social Services is dedicated to maintaining the identity of the Minnesota Vietnamese community while addressing the basic economic, educational, and health needs of refugees and immigrants statewide. VSS offers English classes that are tailored to fit individual needs. They are offered at various skill levels, accommodating the needs of persons who know no English as well as individuals who possess basic language skills, but would like to become more fluent. www.ecfe.spps.org/ Family literacy is an approach to inter-generational learning focused on the family. It acknowledges family and culture as the foundation of learning for the child. Family literacy recognizes the parent as the child’s first and most important teacher, and acknowledges that the literacy of the parent is crucial to the development of the literacy of the child. Family literacy provides instruction to enrich the home environments through interactive, inter-generational learning that respects family and culture and models, supports, values and promotes literacy and lifelong learning. Volunteers are needed to tutor adult English language learners at five St. Paul locations. Minimum commitment of 2.5 hours per week is required. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday in the morning, and Tuesday through Thursday in the afternoon. Times and days of class offerings vary per location. Adult ESL, computer and citizenship classes, as follows: Citizenship: Thursday and Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This class prepares learners for the citizenship interview and the reading, writing, and history/civics tests necessary to become U.S. citizens. Computer literacy: Monday through Wednesday, 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This class follows the curriculum developed by Northstar Digital Literacy. Learners receive a certificate after they pass the computerized assessment test that is linked to and scored by Northstar Digital Literacy. Job Club: Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This English language class focuses on the world of work where students learn about the various types of jobs, how to be a good employee, general job skills, how to find a job, and basic computer skills. Adult English Language Learning: There are two sessions, and learners can chose to attend one or both. First session: 9:30 a.m. - noon Second session: 12:30 to 2:30 The majority of our learners are ethnic Karen refugees from Burma and Thailand. In addition to improving their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, they also learn basic computer and math skills. Some learners are not literate in their languages when they first come to class and are very proud when they can print there names. Others, Some with college degrees from their countries of origin, attend our classes because they wish to improve their English skills. |

Title: ESL Tutor Purpose/objective: In KOM’s ESL Class, Karen and other refugees from Burma learn basic English skills in a classroom environment.
